In celebration of its first year

IMA vows stronger campaigns, challenges GFMD

 

In the midst of the worsening global economic recession, the International Migrants Alliance vows stronger campaigns as it celebrates its first year of founding.

                               

“The IMA’s founding in June 2008 came at a time when violations against migrants and refugees around the world intensify with the looming of the global financial crisis. Within this year, we registered our stalwart resistance against neoliberal globalization and we vow a stronger force in the years to come,” said Eni Lestari, chairperson of the IMA.

Ice factory ammonia leak floors Bangladeshi workers

ALOR STAR, Malaysia Mon:

An ammonia gas leak at an ice-making factory in Simpang Empat Kuar near here forced four Bangladeshi workers to be warded at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital today. The four workers, in their 30s, were sleeping in their living quarters, located in the factory premise, in the 11am incident.

 

Alor Star fire station chief Mohd Taakop Mohd Dali said the leak was detected by a few co-workers of the four when they returned to their rooms.

Human trafficking and drug smuggling have replaced pirate attacks as the leading crime threat off Malaysia's long coastline, a top maritime official said today.

"Piracy has been gradually reduced. But the main challenges (now) are smuggling of humans and there is also the smuggling of drugs," said Admiral Mohamad Amdan Kurish of the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency.
"That needs to be checked. Last year we scored a major drug bust, there was an attempt to bring in 200 kilograms of ganja (marijuana) from the Golden Triangle," he told reporters.

SUARAM, Tenaganita, KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall and Youth 4 Change (Y4C) is organising a vigil that is part of an initiative of coordinated vigils by various groups in Southeast Asia. While we have our vigil for Aung San Suu Kyi in Malaysia, other groups in other countries in Southeast Asia will also be having vigils at the same time!

Please come with your friends to show solidarity for Aung San Suu Kyi - one of the greatest leader of peaceful resistance against oppression of our time - and the oppressed people of Burma.

You can also make your own posters and/or banners that shout of support for Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma. Spread the word!

Look at what this Burmese Migrant, who was in Malaysia's Detention Centre in Juru died of – Leptospirosis

 

"The infection is commonly transmitted to humans by allowing animal urine contaminated water to come in contact with unhealed breaks in the skin, eyes or the mucous membranes."

 

Does that not further confirm that our Detention Centres in Malaysia are in a bad unhygienic state - Now, we are are responsible for this migrant's death...

 

It was already a shocker when SUHAKAM (Malaysia's Human Rights Commission) told us that "ABOUT 1,300 illegal foreigners have died during detention in the past six years, Malaysia Nanban quoted Malaysian Human Rights (Suhakam) commissioner Datuk N.
