Civil Society Organisations and Trade Unions Join Forces for the first time to Table Recommendations on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers to the Ministry of Manpower

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Singapore National Consultation on the ASEAN Declaration of the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers officially handed over their recommendations to the Ministry of Manpower. The report, known as the National Statement is the culmination of two days of consultation with
38 representatives from 17 organizations comprising of members of Singapore’s civil societies and trade unions. The consultation was held at the Peninsula Excelsior Hotel from 16-17 of April 2009 under the auspices of the Task Froce on ASEAN Migrant Workers.

The legislature’s Internal Administration Committee yesterday agreed on draft amendments that grant work rights to Chinese nationals immediately upon marriage to Taiwanese and abolish a NT$2 million (US$60,000) cap on the inheritance they could receive from their Taiwanese spouses.

NATIONAL CONSULTATION ON ILO DECENT WORK AGENDA FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS.

 

ITS TIME FOR STANDARD SETTING TO ENSURE RECOGNITION OF RIGHTS OF DOMESTIC WORKERS.

 

The Malaysian government began to officially recruit foreign domestic workers more than 25 years ago.  The number of domestic workers recruited has grown from a few hundred to almost half a million today. This reflects the heavy reliance on domestic workers and the need for their services by Malaysian households as we grew economically.

All Nepal Peasants' Federation (ANPFa) in collaboration with the Pesticide Action Network Asia Pacific (PAN AP) celebrated the International Peasants Day by launching the Year of Rice Action (YORA) Programme for the Save our Rice Campaign in Asia amidst gala functions. On the occasion, Mr. Bam Dev Gautam, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Minister for Home Affairs and Chairperson of ANPFa initiated the transplanting of rice seedlings in Tutunga village in Pokhara, about 230 kilometres west of Kathmandu, along with foreign delegates and indigenous peasants activists and local farmers. The inaugural function which was chaired by Ms. Santa Manavi, Vice Chairperson of ANPFa commenced in Tutunga Kaski at the presence of thousands of peasants. The emcee of the function was Mr. Prem Dangal, General Secretary of ANPFa. Faithful homage was offered to the martyrs of peasant movements by observing one minute silence by all the participants and the guests. The representatives from fraternal peasant organizations from the Philippines, Bangladesh, Japan and Malaysia also attended the event.
